Roc de Cambes on tõeline pärl. 1987. aastal ostis François Mitjavile vähetuntud Côtes de Bourgi veinipiirkonnas (30 km St. Emilionist) asuva veinimaja nimega Roc de Cambes. 14 hektari suuruse veiniaia pinnas on väga sarnane Tertre Roteboeuf’ile (savi ja lubjakivi segu) ning on ideaalse lõunapoolse asetusega kohe Gironde jõe ääresel nõlvakul. Ebatavaline pinnas, mis on pigem tüüpiline Pomerolile ja St. Emilionile ja unikaalne asukoht on peamised põhjused, miks François selle valduse esimesel külaskäigul koheselt soetas.

Roc de Cambes on väga eriline seetõttu, et veini teeb François Mitjavile täpselt sama lähenemisega nagu Tertre Roteboeufis. See tähendab, et saagikus hoitakse ülimadal, viinamarjad koristatakse ideaalses küpsuses võimalikult hilja (tihtipeale 4 nädalat hiljem kui naabrid) ja veini laagerdamiseks kasutatakse täpselt samu Prantsuse parimaid tammevaate. Tulemuseks on marjane, heas tasakaalus ja velvetiste tanniinidega täidlane vein. François Mitjavile sõnul on Tertre Roteboeuf ja Roc de Cambes igas mõttes võrdse kvaliteediga, kuna on valmistatud sama hoolikusega. Hinnavahe on eelkõige tingitud sellest, et üks on St. Emilion ja teine Côtes de Bourg ning piirkonna tuntus koos turuga paneb hinnad paika. Lisaks pole François sõnul üldse ebatavaline kui eelistatakse Roc de Cambes’i ning mitmel pimedegustatsioonidel on Roc de Cambes segi aetud muuhulgas ka First Growth veinimõisadega.

Roc de Cambes on valmistatud 80% Merlot ja 20% Cabernet Franc viinamarjadest. Veinipuude keskmine vanus on 50 aastat. Kääritamine toimub suurtes betoonmahutites, pärast mida laagerdub vein 100% uutes Prantsuse tammevaatides 18 kuud. Väga üllatav ja elegantne vein, mida võib kindlasti juua noorena ja keldrisse unustada kuni 2040.

“The 2017 Roc de Cambes, for a long time we considered changing the blend of Roc de Cambes by pulling up the Cabernet, but in the end we kept it the same blend as it is the character of the wine. This is matured in 100% new oak (although it is impossible to tell.) It has a very clean and pure bouquet, perfumed blackberry and bilberry fruit, a touch of seawater in the background. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannin, notes of mulberry, blackberry, brine and touches of brown spice. Like the Domaine des Cambes there is fine energy in situ and it feels long and full of tension on the classy, quite peppery finish. Drinking range: 2020 – 2035.” Neal Martin 91-93 points
